The Igor Gorin Memorial Award honors aspiring opera singers who have won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in Arizona, or a similar competition in the last 7 years. Igor Gorin was a world-renowned opera singer, and also performed in film and radio, and on stage and TV. He later became a professor of opera at The University of Arizona. He believed that studying music strengthens one’s character and provides young people with a sense of accomplishment and worth.
Mrs. Mary Gorin started the award at the Community Foundation in honor of her late husband in 1987. 54 awards have been given since inception, totaling $203,800.
Established in 1980 and certified under the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations, the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona’s mission is to work with charitably minded individuals and organizations to strengthen Southern Arizona communities, now and for generations to come.
